Family Makerspace: Build Together, Belong to a Community
In a world filled with screens, instant content, and passive consumption, something essential is being lost - the joy of making with your hands. Family Makerspace Workshop is designed to bring that back through shared, hands-on experiences where families slow down, think deeply, and build real things together.
Led by Simone Majocchi, a journalist, tech enthusiast, and 3D-printing popularizer, each session is thoughtfully crafted as a guided, hands-on making experience that blends learning, creativity, and fun.
Participants are encouraged to explore, ask questions, experiment, and think like makers and engineers, understanding both the how and the why behind what they build.
Sessions are conducted in intentionally small groups to ensure every family receives personalized guidance, meaningful interaction, and dedicated support at every step of the process.
Families can select their preferred time slot during registration, ensuring flexibility while maintaining a well-paced, high-quality experience for all participants.

What Makes This Experience Different
Real Tools, Real Making
Work inside a functioning makerspace with professional equipment, quality materials, and genuine technology, not toys or simplified versions.
Shared Learning Journey
Parents and children explore, troubleshoot, and discover together as equals, creating meaningful bonding through collaborative problem-solving.
Guided Discovery
Expert mentorship supports every step without dictating the path, balancing structure with creative freedom for authentic learning experiences.
This is not a one-day activity or entertainment disguised as learning. It's a genuine hands-on experience where families build real things, develop practical skills, and discover the joy of craftsmanship together.
Home Automation & IoT: Making Everyday Systems Understandable
Most of us use "smart" devices every day without understanding what's inside them or how they actually work. In this session, Simone guides families through the core building blocks of real-world home automation in a way that's approachable, hands-on, and genuinely fun.
Families work directly with sensors that detect motion, light, temperature, or air quality; controllers that act as the system's brain; actuators that create real action by turning things on, off, or moving them; and simple logic rules that decide what happens next. You'll see how a system responds in real time — adjusting inputs, changing rules, and immediately observing the outcome.
This hands-on exploration makes IoT technology feel intuitive, practical, and exciting rather than mysterious or intimidating.
The Building Blocks You'll Explore
01
Sensors: The System's Eyes and Ears
Discover how sensors detect changes in the environment — measuring motion, light levels, temperature variations, and air quality to gather real-world information.
02
Controllers: The Decision-Making Brain
Learn how controllers process sensor data and make decisions based on the rules you create, acting as the intelligent center of any automation system.
03
Actuators: Creating Real Action
See how actuators translate digital commands into physical results — turning devices on or off, adjusting brightness, or creating movement in the real world.
04
Logic Rules: Programming Behavior
Experiment with simple logic rules that determine system behavior — "if this happens, then do that" — and watch your creations respond intelligently.
DIY Electronics & Creative Machines
Hands-On Electronics
Families are guided through practical electronics activities where components are assembled, tested, and truly understood. Mistakes aren't just accepted — they're explored as valuable learning opportunities.
Parents and children troubleshoot together, building confidence through supportive, interactive experiences. The session is structured to welcome first-time participants while remaining engaging for those with prior experience.
Creative Machines & Art
Explore creative machines such as pen plotters and generative art systems. Discover how motors, movement, and mechanical logic combine with simple code to produce beautiful physical results.
This part of the session is especially fun and visually engaging, demonstrating how engineering principles can be both playful and creative — making complex concepts accessible and enjoyable.
Your Active Role in the Making Process
Choose Your Direction
Work on your own builds, making meaningful choices about what you want to create and how you want to approach it.
Test & Experiment
Try different ideas, see what works, learn from what doesn't, and adjust your approach based on real feedback.
Learn Through Doing
Gain understanding through guided exploration rather than following rigid instructions, developing genuine maker skills.
From Workshop to Ongoing Community
Family Makerspace is designed as a gentle, welcoming introduction to technology and the broader maker world, going far beyond a traditional “STEM workshop.”
This single session opens the door to creative thinking, hands-on problem solving, and purposeful use of tools and technologies, helping families understand how ideas turn into real-world creations.
Beyond the hands-on activity, families gain insight into how a makerspace functions as a creative community hub, and how curiosity-led learning naturally extends through community collaboration and ongoing mentorship.
